Slow Slip on the Imperial Fault
​Collaborators: Dr. Kathryn Materna and Dr. Roger Bilham



The Imperial fault in Southern California is a strike-slip fault line. This fault ruptured producing large earthquakes in 1979 (Mw 6.5) and in 1940 (Mw 6.9). However, this fault has been observed to move aseismically as well. This project aimed to determine the depth, length and the amount of slip these events were occurring at. By modeling observed GPS and InSAR data, we determined that slow slip events were occurring at shallow depths, confined to the sediment layer. These results could imply that the Imperial fault is locked and/or stronger at depth.
